Review from Christian Music Review Headquarters
1/11/00

I don’t often come across music by independent artists that is this expertly produced. “Worry ‘Bout Nothin’” showsan excellence in production that is a pleasure to hear, allowing the music to be a very nice medium for delivering her messages of worship, praise, encouragement, and prayer

If I didn’t know better, the expertise obvious in some of the complicated arrangements of strings, piano, percussion, and voice would almost lead me to believe Michael W. Smith had a hand in its production. Worry ‘Bout Nothin’ was a pleasant surprise, one which I suspect will spend some time in my car CD player. The songs are well sung and purposeful, and the production work on the CD is second to none. If you have the opportunity to do so, I encourage you to listen to this CD!

PD Westman - Pop/AC

PD WESTMAN

pdwestman_pic.jpg
PD Westman makes his Road Records debut on the CD compilation New Faces Volume Three with his song “Shelter”. The piece is a very high energy AC/Pop song with a funk horn arrangement which could be compared to Peter Gabriel’s smash hit “Sledgehammer”

Westman’s music is very spiritual and the depth of his lyric writing could be compared to that of pop music artist “Sting”. “Shelter” was written by PD Westman, and engineered at Road Records recording studio by Conrad Askland.

Off The Record - Rock

Off The Record Original Retro Rock Band
Judges By Day - Musicians By Night

otr_kickd.jpg
Off The Record performs original retro rock. Their music has elements of Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and the ’60’s through ’80’s. Included on their album are “20th Century Man”, “Save The Children”, “Taking It All The Way”, “Politics”, “Water of Love”, “Ode to the Sixties” and 4 more original songs

otr_gibson.jpg

Members at the time of recording were John Gibson (Drums), Peter Heide (Guitar), Jim Dorr (Guitar), Bob Fowler (Keyboards) and John Sanchez (Bass). Most of the members take turns on lead and background vocals, and also contribute to the group with their individual original songs.

Their original album was recorded at Road Records recording studio and produced by Conrad Askland. They will be featured on the Road Records CD compilation release New Faces Volume Four.

UPDATE 08/01 - After a long wait the final mixes for the album have finally been mastered. The band also has a demo of cover tunes available.

BARSTOW - He may not be as famous as Ringo Starr, but Superior Court Judge John Gibson showed he is just as witty and talented a drummer as the famed ex-Beatle.

“I’m so ground in the 60’s, it’s painful, “Gibson said. “We’re allowed to play twice a month.”

otr_pic1.jpg

Gibson wasn’t the only one who was tuned in to the past as he and other local jurists exclusively played oldies from the ’50’s and ’60’s during a sun-drenched Labor Day at Lake Dolores Water Park.

While patrons milled about and played in the water, the band of musicians who cleverly call themselves Off The Record, entertained whoever passed their way. Superior Court Judge James Dorr played rhythm guitar and sang like a pro during four long sets.

otr_sanchez.jpg

Barstow Superior Court language interpreter Peter Heide was also in the mix, playing lead guitar as well as attorney bob Fowler, who was jamming on the keyboards. Playing bass was none other than new band member John Sanchez, a GTE employee.

otr_0201.jpg
Dorr and Gibson did most of the talking. All the band members credited their wives for tolerating their hobby to entertain crowds.

Having played since he was a boy, Gibson recalled a now-defunct coffee house on the Sunset Strip in Los Agneles called “Ben Franklin’s”, where rock ‘n’ roll was a lot simpler.

The judge looks up to the late great rock drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, and especially drummer Jim Keltner, as sources of inspiration for his style of playing.

otr_peter2.jpg

But the musical taste of today’s youth isn’t anything like Gibson’s as he found out during a past gig when a little girl asked whether Off The Record played requests. “She asked me to play something from the Spice Girls,” Gibson said. “Yeah, and after that I became “Old Spice”, Dorr interjected.

Dorr is credited for starting the 1 1/2 year old rock band, but Gibson would say it was really Heide and Dorr who got the ball rolling.

otr_vox.jpg

Regardless of who initiated the band, the happy members of Off The Record love what they do when they aren’t working at the courthouse and showed that enthusiasm when they played nearly every signature song of the oldies period from Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire” to the Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

Album: Colors Never Imagined

The Robby Combs Band is a guitar driven Christian rock band from Bakersfield, California. Front man, guitarist, and founder, Robby Combs, has set his namesake band on a course to encourage as well as entertain a global audience.

robby_combs_band_pic1.jpg

“Colors Never Imagined” is RCB’s independently produced debut album. It includes 10 original pop/rock songs written by Robby Combs and features a solid grooving band supporting his ear catching guitar work and impressive lead vocal.

The Modern and Classic rock styles of groups like U2, Third Day, Matchbox 20, and Petra give a good representation of the overall Robby Combs Band sound.

The band is currently promoting “Colors Never Imagined” with energetic live concerts throughout the California region. The live show always features a surprise for the audience and includes “kicked-up” versions of the same heartfelt songs on the album.

robby_combs_band_pic2.jpg

Before RCB, Robby was the lead singer and guitarist for Bakersfield’s very popular Hard Rock Christian band “Crimson.” In 1997, after Crimson disbanded, he met drummer Greg DeWitt. The two shared a stong desire to create and perform songs that would encourage and entertain all people, and so they began…

Early in 2000, bassist Stan Blake and keyboardist Zak Graham joined with Robby and Greg to complete the RCB lineup. Over several months of hard work the band learned many lessons. Some were simple and some were incredibly painful. Yet, each lesson contributed to the album that the Robby Combs Band could only call “Colors Never Imagined.”

“Colors Never Imagined” CD is Robby Combs (Guitar, Bass, Lead Vocals), Greg DeWitt (Drums, BGV), Conrad Askland (Studio Keyboards). The band recorded and was produced at the Road Records recording studio.

Mudfish - Rock Band

Mudfish
At the time of recording the Mudfish band line-up was Hank Thorpe, Dan Shippey, Bret Keys and Mike Rigby. A great straight ahead rock guitar band from Tehachapi, California.

Mudfish is featured on the Road Records compilation CD New Faces Volume Four with the song “Shotgun Sam” They were engineered by David Grasico and mixed by Conrad Askland.

“This is good no-nonsense rock ‘n roll. Strong driving beats, crunchy dual guitars and good ZZ Top style vocals”, says producer Conrad Askland. “They would go over equally well at a biker bar or a southern rock club.”

mudfish2.jpg

Formed in November of 1999, “Mudfish” combines the forces of two now defunct cover bands, “The Ragged Edge Band”, and “Jester”. Utilizing the musicianship and tight vocal harmonies of Thorpe and Rigby, as well as a polished rhythm section in Keys and Shippey, “Mudfish” has earned a reputation as a cut above the average cover band. The ever growing repertoire of the band contains the best of the rock and roll standards, as well as many current radio hits.

mudfish3.jpg

Bret Keys
Bret is a native Californian. He has handled drums and percussion for countless bands. He supplies his services to several other projects as well a Mudfish. As one would expect from constant playing, his ability, style, and depth are unsurpassed.
Bret can also be seen performing with “Tanya and the Wallbangers”, “PowerSerge”, and “Gypsee and Band X”

Mike Rigby
A native of Palmdale CA, Mike has played in several cover and original rock bands from here to the Pacific Northwest. Although his style leans toward rock contemporary, he has all the chops and then some to play anything from the “Classic Rock” era.

mudfish1.jpg

Dan Shippey
Dan is a native of Mojave, CA, where music seems to be the norm. Starting out as a guitar player, he finally found a home playing bass for several bands over the years. After a nine year gig with “The Ragged Edge Band”, Dan has landed in to what he considers to be the “best one yet!”.

Hank Thorpe

A native of Georgia, Hank is a long time California transplant (thanks to the U.S. Air Force). His vocal ability and guitar style are well known in the local area. His look and musical style bring a “Southern” touch to Mudfish.
